Built at mid-13th century on the foundations of an old Roman castrum as a defence against the Mongols, the fortress lies on a 370 m high volcanic hill that dominates the town of Deva and the Mure║ Valley.
The fortress was made a princely residence by Iancu of Hunedoara in the 15th century and fulfilled an important role in the anti-Ottoman wars in the 16th century.
